Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
